In 1960, Luton Tatum founded Luton Tatum Insurance Service.  In 1969, C.D. Burkhead and Ed Hester were both working for the National Life Insurance Company as life insurance agents.  Both men dreamed of owning their own business and desired to be able to offer their clients more than just life insurance products.  In June of 1972, they partnered and purchased Luton Tatum Insurance Service.  With that purchase, they formed Tatum, Hester & Burkhead insurance agency.  

Ed Hester retired in 1989.  C.D. Burkhead became the sole owner and agency principal.  In 1990 while attending Murray State University, Brian Burkhead began working part-time in the agency until his 1992 graduation.  After graduation, Brian began as a full-time producer in the agency.  Following the untimely death of C.D. Burkhead in 1996, Brian Burkhead became the sole owner and agency principal of Tatum, Hester & Burkhead.  In August of 1996, Steve McGowan joined the agency as a producer for all lines of insurance.
